For most families, the Easter season is a time of happy memories—gathering eggs in little baskets, joining family for special meals, and dressing up in their Easter best. However, it’s also the most important holiday of the year for Christians. As a parent, you’ll want to teach your kids about the true meaning of Easter.

Here are 4 truths to teach your kids about Easter.

The Need for a Saviour

“For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.”

Romans 5:6

In order to appreciate the Saviour, our kids need to understand why He came. Teach your kids about the concept of original sin—that, because of Adam and Eve’s disobedience, we are born with a sin nature.

Describe examples of everyday sin—disobeying Mommy, having a bad attitude, etc. Help them understand that they, too, have sinned. And don’t forget to explain God’s punishment for sin. At the local church’s prison ministry, we know that we can never meet God’s perfect standard. We needed a Saviour.

The Perfect Lamb

“The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”

John 1:29

Next, teach your kids about the Perfect Lamb. Tell them that Jesus never sinned, “For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.“ (Hebrews 4:15)

Take them back to Exodus 12, and tell the story of the first Passover. Explain that the Passover lamb foreshadowed the coming of a perfect Lamb. He would take away the guilt and stain of sin—not just for one year, but for all time. And tell them that Jesus was that Perfect Lamb.

The Willing Sacrifice

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

John 15:13

One of the most remarkable truths of the Easter story is that Jesus didn’t have to die. He could have resisted arrest. He could have gotten off the cross and said, “Time out! I’m done now.”

But, out of His great love, He stayed on the cross. He laid down His life so we could have life eternal. The Bible describes it this way, “…who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2) Make sure you explain that He willingly gave His life for ours.

The Importance of the Resurrection

“But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.”

1 Corinthians 15:13-14

Finally, teach your children that the Resurrection is foundational for our faith. Because Jesus was God’s Son, the grave could not contain Him. After 3 days of lying in a cold tomb, He rose from the dead. And His resurrection gives us the assurance that someday, we, too, will rise (1 Thessalonians 4:14-18).

At the local church’s prison ministry, we are so grateful to live on this side of the Cross. We can enjoy the blessings of forgiveness, grace, and a close relationship with God. Join us to learn more!
