Jesus: The Anchor of Our Soul

“Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;” (Hebrews 6:19a)

Who is our only Hope in this world? Jesus Christ is our Hope and the Anchor of our soul!

In what ways is Jesus an Anchor to His people?

Like an Anchor, Jesus has promised to be faithful.

Psalm 36:5 declares, “Thy mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens; and thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds.” With infinite resources, Jesus promises to meet our material needs (Phil. 4:19) He has promised to never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5c). He will never stop loving us (Romans 8:35-39). He will preserve us blameless until His heavenly Kingdom (2 Timothy 4:18). We can trust His faithfulness!

Like an Anchor, Jesus gives us security.

If a sailboat has not dropped its anchor, it will drift with every passing wind. It will be tossed about by storms, and it may run aground and be shipwrecked. People without an Anchor have no security and stability. They drift with every passing wind of philosophy and culture. They are overwhelmed by the storms of life and have no Hope. They cannot see the danger of shipwreck until it is too late to change course.

In contrast, we who have an Anchor for our souls have security. Our Anchor gives us wisdom to interpret life and chart a solid course through its waters. In the storms of life, we cling to the promises of Jesus. We rest in His love and find strength in His peace. We can find security in Him!

Like an Anchor, Jesus will take us safely Home.

When a ship arrived in its home harbour, its crew would drop the anchor. After a long, difficult voyage, they would delight in arriving home at last. They would walk ashore—into the arms of beloved family and dear friends. Often, they would sit down to a feast of good things and celebrate their prosperous voyage.

At the end of our time on earth, He will take us Home to be with Him. The Anchor of our souls will drop for the final time, and we will be with Him forever in glory. We can anticipate that day with joy!

As the hymn writer Priscilla Owens wrote in 1882,

We have an anchor that keeps the soul

Stedfast and sure while the billows roll,

Fastened to the Rock which cannot move,

Grounded firm and deep in the Savior’s love.

What a wonderful anchor we have in Jesus Christ!
