Our God has many attributes, or qualities, that are distinctly divine. One of His most striking attributes is omniscience. According to the Oxford Dictionaries, omniscience means “the state of knowing everything.”
Here are 3 key truths about God’s omniscience.
1) God has always known everything.
The Bible clearly teaches that God had no counsellor, teacher, or education. Isaiah asked, “Who hath directed the Spirit of the Lord, or being his counsellor hath taught him? With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding?” (Isaiah 40:13-14)
The natural conclusion is that God never learned. He always knew everything—past, present, and future, both possible and actual. In addition to God’s knowledge of the universe, He also knows Himself perfectly. He stated, “For I am the Lord, I change not…” in Malachi 3:6.
God’s omniscience includes, “every possible item of knowledge concerning everything that exists or could have existed anywhere in the universe at any time in the past or that may exist in the centuries or ages yet unborn.” (A. W. Tozer, Knowledge of the Holy, Chapter 10)
2) God knows the hearts of all men.
In Psalm 139, David wrote, “O Lord, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.” (Psalm 139:1-2) God alone can see the deepest thoughts, desires, and emotions of man. He knows us better than we know ourselves.
For the person who has something to hide, God’s omniscience can be a source of worry, dread, and sleepless nights. He sees us when we we think no one is watching. In the deepest shadows and the darkest thickets, God sees everything as if it was bright as day. If you are struggling with guilt over hidden sins or addictions, there is hope. 3) God knows our human weakness and frailty.
For those of us who know Jesus Christ personally, God’s omniscience is a great source of comfort. He knows our weaknesses, but He has already washed away our sins with Jesus’ blood. No matter what accusation the enemy may bring against us, our sins are covered by the blood of Jesus Christ.
Also, God knows what it’s like to be human…to walk on this sin-cursed earth. Jesus knew hunger, sadness, fatigue, pain, temptation, and even separation from God. He felt our pains and bore our sorrows. “His knowledge of our afflictions and adversities is more than theoretic; it is personal, warm, and compassionate,” wrote A. W. Tozer.
For the believer, God’s omniscience is an encouraging truth. No matter what you are facing right now, God knows and cares about you. He understands how you feel and sees the burdens in your life.
But God doesn’t want you to carry those burdens alone. He invites you to, “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matt. 11:29-30) When you bring your burdens to the Lord and trust Him, you can find incredible peace and joy, even in the most difficult circumstances.
