One of the things that life offers us is the gift of friendships. We all have those people who are close as good friends. We like, love, trust, and are loyal to them. We’re happy to spend our time with them.
However, no human being on earth can understand us the way the Holy Spirit of God does. He is that type of friend that that sticks closer than a brother as written in Proverbs 18:24,
‘A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.’
He knows, sees, and understands every part of us, and He gets it. He offers friendship to every believer.
The Holy Spirit’s desire is the same as our Saviour’s when He said,
Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you (John 15:15)
Seeing that God through the Holy Spirit offers His friendship to us, it should be our goal to befriend Him.
But, how can we grow in friendship with the Holy Spirit?
How to Become Friends with the Holy Spirit
Here are 3 keys that can help you become friends with the Holy Spirit.
1. Spend time with the Holy Spirit
Friendship with the Holy Spirit starts like any other true friendship. We spend time with our friends and so the way you will get to be friends with the Holy Spirit is by spending quality time with Him.
The Father has sent the Holy Spirit to “abide” with us. Among other things, that means spending time with us.
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for He dwelleth with you, and shall be in you (John 14:16-17).
Since He dwells with us, we can talk to the Holy Spirit the way we would talk to a friend. We can ask His opinion about things. Talk to Him when things are good and when they are not. The more we spend time together with the Holy Spirit, the more we grow close to Him.
2. Become Dependent on Him
Every believer is called to walk in the Spirit and keep in step with Him. If we are to become friends with the Holy Spirit in a fruitful way, we must learn to walk in Him and become completely dependent upon Him every moment. We don’t know what to do; He does. As our helper, we can depend on the Holy Spirit. We need His power and wisdom. He’s our supernatural help to be and to do what God has called us to be and do. This is possible only if we completely depend on Him.
3. Reverence Him
Psalm 25:14 says, “The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear Him, and He makes known to them his covenant.”
Friendship with the Holy Spirit comes about by fearing Him, following his leadership, making time to ask Him how He feels about things, and following his guidance completely as He instructs us through the Word of God.
Ephesians 4:30 says, “And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption”
That means we must also respect, love, and make time for the Holy Spirit. We must learn what He loves and doesn’t love. When we do something that hurts or offends Him, we must ask for forgiveness from Him. The Holy Spirit has feelings like any other friend we have. But, He is also full of grace, forgiveness, and matchless love.
Is the Holy Spirit your Friend?
The Holy Spirit is waiting to be your friend right now. When we seek to know the Holy Spirit as our friend, He will lead and guide us. He longs to walk with us in a meaningful relationship with Him. By inviting the Holy Spirit into an everyday friendly relationship Him, He’ll transform us, convict us, our life, our relationships and our choices into becoming more like Jesus.
